H6 / Reed Young - Three Stories
Above all, Reed Young tells stories through pictures. His ambition is to portray mankind and human society by putting individual portraits together, to form a collective fresco. From the CEO of a large multinational to a man who goes to bed early because he can’t afford the electricity bill, his curious gaze, unencumbered by bulky camera equipment, always rests on the same thing: the human condition. George Perec’s “Life: A User’s Manual” comes to mind. Perhaps it is no coincidence that in “Three stories”, Reed uses the same metaphor of the building in Rue Simon– Crubellier to tell three different “stories”. Three remarkably normal situations, like so many floors in an apartment building.

Reed Young è soprattutto un narratore per immagini. La sua ambizione è di riprodurre la realtà umana e sociale attraverso la composizione di ritratti singoli come pezzi di un affresco collettivo. Dall’amministratore delegato di una grande multinazionale all’uomo che va a dormire presto perché non può permettersi di pagare l’energia elettrica, quello che il suo sguardo curioso indaga, con il supporto agile di un’apparecchiatura fotografica ridotta all’essenziale, è sempre la stessa cosa: la condizione umana. Viene in mente “La Vita, istruzioni per l’uso” di George Perec, e forse non a caso, in “Three stories”, Reed utilizza la stessa metafora del palazzo di rue Simon–Crubellier per raccontare tre diverse “storie”, tre situazioni straordinariamente normali, come altrettanti piani di un condominio universale — “story” in inglese significa appunto anche “level”, “floor”, in italiano “piano”.
